Movin' right along in search of good times and good news,
With good friends you can't lose,
This could become a habit!
Opportunity knocks once let's reach out and grab it (yeah!),
Together we'll nab it,
We'll hitchhike, bus or yellow cab it!
(Cab it?)
Welcome to our new home. This has been a project a few months in the thinking and a few weeks in the doing. The idea to move to an independent website was actually fourth on my offseason “to-do” list. Items One, Two and Three are as of yet untouched. I wanted to move to an independent website for a few reasons which I’ll bore you with after we get you settled.
Getting Settled
There are a few ways that you can get involved with the site right away.
Register to become a member of the site
Update: I'm a crappy salesman. Registering for the site gets you the ability to post in the forums. Also, if you're interested in being a contributor it'll be a must. It’s free. We keep our data collection to a minimum. E-mail,username, password and display name are all that are required. We will not sell your personal information to anyone, ever. I’m still working on a Privacy Policy, but some things can wait until summer. If you’re really worried about me misusing your information hit the ‘Contact Us’ e-mail up in the menu and let me know about it.
Update your RSS feed
The RSS subscription process is a bit different than it was on the old site. To subscribe here, you click on the RSS button next to where the blog says “With This Shield Or Upon It…”. This will take you to a pop-up screen. Copy and Paste that address into your RSS reader of choice. Or just use this link: http://www.shawlanespartans.com/DesktopModules/LiveBlog/Handlers/Syndication.ashx?mid=497&PortalId=0&tid=56
Update #2: Some people have reported that the RSS feed looks weird when click to subscribe in Chrome. If it does try to paste the address bar info into your RSS reader anyway. If that doesn't work, flip me an e-mail.
Follow the Shaw Lane Spartans Twitter Account
My kids are adorable little koala bears(cute from a distance, but might kill you up close), but that’s not what you want to read about when you sign up for my twitter feed. If you want straight unadulterated(my heart says steamy, but not really) Spartan talk, follow us on Twitter at our new account. We’ll keep the personal chatter to a minimum there.
We have a Facebook Page too
You can find it at this link. I have my own opinions of facebook, but lots of people still use it. And if everyone told me to jump off a bridge, I may well do it.

Interested in becoming a Contributor?
Send me an e-mail. There are plans in the works to make simple blogging something everyone can do just by registering for an account, but for now I’m keeping things tightened down a bit. I am on the look for daily contributors, subject matter contributors and the occasional poster who can kill a post but is a very important person in real life. If you think this is you, hit me at the e-mail link above.
Why make the jump?
First, the Blogger platform, it’s rigid and doesn’t lend itself well to true user interaction, the format is very much “I blog, you react or don’t.”. I wanted to move to a platform that encouraged more user interaction and this website gives us that opportunity. Adding contributors is easy to do administratively and we have created a forum for people to talk about MSU, sports or whatever they want. The best part, we’ve barely scratched the surface of what this new framework allows for us. There are hundreds of thousands of ways we can modify the site to allow for better user interaction.
Second, there’s something to be said for the idea that any content uploaded to this site belongs to it’s proprietors and isn’t sitting out somewhere in the Google Cloud. It’ll end up in the Google cloud anyway, but there’s something comforting about knowing that the modicum of control I have over what happens to this site and it’s content are solely in my less technically competent but more concerned hands than the Google in the Sky.
Finally, here comes the hubris. I just wanted to try my own hand at a site. As many of you either know or have surmised, I’m a web developer by day and a blogger by night, there’s nothing technically challenging about putting a site like this one together. I spend lots of time assisting people with their data-driven analytics and trying to make the green profit bars bigger than the red expenditure ones, it’s nice to work on a site that’s just for MSU Sports Blogging. There’s not mountains of dollars to be made, it’s a sports blog for crying out loud.
So that’s it. Tomorrow, it’s back to pumping out content instead of site notes, announcements, etc. As for the future here, expect more deep dive football content in the summer and fall. That’s going to be the centerpiece of the blog going forward. The goal of this new site though is to be an excellent MSU Sports community that happens to have picture pages and deep-dive football analysis on the blog. Thanks for your readership so far and I look forward to building this site with all of you.
Go Green,
Jim
